As I mentioned on my first post, I was really touched by Ann Curry's encouragement of people doing kind acts in memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy. I try to do random acts of kindness here and there, and I've received two great ones over the past year (way before this) that truly brightened not only my day but also my outlook on people in general. Honestly, I do believe that most people are 90% good but also that sometimes we need a reminder of that. I'm posting my progress on this small project not to brag but to keep myself on track with actually completing the process and also just in case I can provide ideas for anyone else.
Despite my best intentions, the universe itself seemed to conspiring against me doing some of these acts. For example, I went to Wawa to get a coffee with the firm intention of buying one for the person behind me. However, the store split into two lines and although the other one was long, no one at all got behind me in line. Exact same thing at Starbucks... everyone in front of me... no one behind me! So that will have to wait for another time... but onto the ones I have completed:
#3 Used extra Kohl's cash to purchase items for those in need-- warm gloves, hat, socks, etc.
This one made me happy because despite my dislike of spending time in Kohl's due to the claustrophobic feeling the store invokes in me, it's actually an idea I thought of on my own when my mom offered me the $30.00 in Kohl's cash. This technically should be 2.5 at this point because I attempted one delivery to a shelter (even after calling and confirming) and no one answered the door, so I still need to actually drop off.
#4 Donated some gift cards to www.giftcardgiver.com.
They "distribute donated cards to worthy nonprofits" according to All You magazine (thanks for the idea!). It couldn't have been easier. Just take any gift card with any amount (full or partially used), write the balance in marker on the front of the card, and mail it.
#5 Left a 5.00 Dunkin Donuts gift card and a note on a car parked next to me at Target.
I actually tried to do this a few times before I got up the nerve. Even though I was doing a good deed, I was really nervous that someone would see me and think I was doing something bad. I also kept seeing cars that looked like good candidates until I realized there was a person in there. Again, I wasn't trying to scare anyone, so I needed an empty car. When I finally did it, I felt great. I know I'd be thrilled if this one happened to me.
